History
In 1630 the indigenous Domingo ChoƩz combined this raw material, weavers from the provinces of Manabi, CaƱar and Azuay in Ecuador specialized in its elaboration. Around the world it is also known as Panama hat, this fame grows during the construction of the Panama Canal, with the visit of the President of the United States Theodore Roosevelt, who together with hundreds of workers wear this iconic hat imported from Ecuador.
AUTHENTIC ECUADORIAN HAT
NATURAL FIBER
Made from palm (Carludovica palmata), it is a natural plant native to the coastal region of Ecuador that only grows there. This palm has an intense green color, its leaves are cut and cooked with water, salt and sulfur to give a soft texture called Paja Toquilla or LISAN (The word LISAN in the Kichwa language means toquilla straw) and thus allow weaving.
HANDWOVEN
Handmade. It is hand-woven by Ecuadorian artisans. These men and women possess unique ancestral knowledge that has been passed down from generation to generation and has perfected their technique that is impossible to manufacture industrially. The thinness of the fabric determines its fineness and manufacturing time.
In 2012, UNESCO recognized the weaving of the Ecuadorian hat as an Intangible Cultural Heritage.
ONE OF A KIND
Toquilla straw and hand weaving make the Ecuadorian hat one of the most luxurious garments in the world. This can cost thousands of dollars, depending on its fineness.
